I think chapter 7 is most effective in the section about distance learning, and the option for students to learn without being in the classroom. I think this could be the jumping off point for something HUGE! Education can be available to everyone and anyone....now we just have to get everyone computer access, and internet access. This, brings me to my next point about the internet. So many things to learn and so many things to take advantage of (research for example). I really liked this chapter!

In fourth grade, my teacher had us use a math program on the computer. The software was based on early American settlers and had the pony express, horse drawn carriage, etc...it would move throughout the town as we got answers correct. I thought it was a fun and new way to practice math skills. Although this type of software is anciet these days....it was fun when I was young!

In continuing my research with the LeapFrog software, I did an evaluation of it and found:

1. Not all sections needed prerequisites for students to use. They're broken up into age groups, starting from birth, to18 years!
2. There's FREE training for educators to learn to use in their classroom!
3. The software does not require upkeep, but you need to continue to buy products to keep up with the system.
4. You can either spend 5 minutes on a specific lesson, or 5 days teaching these things, great time options!
5. The graphics were colorful and easy to see, can be overwhelming for the little ones though...

Overall, I really like the LeapFrog products, they look very useful!

I particularly like the site entitled The JOURNAL, it was innovative in a way that gave students a home-base on addressing issues like crimes in schools, Free K-12 training, and homework help! This is a new kind of site that offers a place for students to communicate openly and to find help and answers to questions. Web'n is also a good website to visit as a database for other websites working with educational tools. I also like software express, it was easy to navigate, and successful in assisting both students and teachers! These are great sites for you to learn more and find helpful resources...

The copyright rules that are in place in the United States are ever-changing...for example, did you know it's ILLEGAL to show movies in classrooms without permission from the copyright company?! People do this everyday and I'm sure not everyone is asking for permission. Something new is cc, that allows "some rights reserved" and allows people to share things you've created....well, now we're thinking!

AACE- This website provides publications (journals), world-wide confrences, societies and chapters for teachers to join and contribute, and inter-organizational Projects that are going on in areas near you!

AECT-This website has things like a career center, posted articles, international leadership for educators, and scholarship opportunites and help

ISTE-Here, you'll find professional development tools, publications and new software, a bookstore, toolkits to buy, funding assistance, and a job posting

ITEA- Here, there's a calendar of events, job postings, memberships to the site, events in your area, and teaching tips

Good morning! Today is almost October, which means I'm almost 21!! I can't wait! This weekend is girls' weekend in Grand Lake, it should be a lot of fun....more to follow!

Educational Technology

In class today, Emily, Bailey and I discussed several different questions as to how to incorporate educational technology into the classroom. One specific question we had, was how to use technology to teach beginner literacy learners how to expand their skills through reading and writing with technologies....here's what we've found....

1. http://www.neitec.or/reading_report/report.htm - discusses using auditory and visual programs on multimedia computers in order to do things like matching words with pictures, sounding out letters shown on the screen, followed by auditory answers, and also using online books that highlight words as their read.

2. www.leapfrogschoolhouse.com/content/funding/Early_Reading_First_Position_Paper.pdf - discusses using their technology the "LeapDesk" in a classroom setting that allows children to read with the help of auditory signals and sounds to learn new words. This website also suggests using the LeapFrog technology in groups around the classroom so that each students' knowledge can be shared within the group. They also mention the importance of using age-appropriate materials that are already packaged through the LeapFrog system.
